Pulau Semakau (28 February 2014)

2014 marks TeamSeagrass's 8th year in monitoring! Woo hoo! Our very first monitoring trip brings us to Pulau Semakau. It is also unfortunately our last trip to Pulau Semakau for the next year or so, as NEA is starting works on the construction of Phase 2's cells to accommodate future waste disposal.

Nevertheless, we managed to gather a team of 20 volunteers - firstly a BIG THANK YOU for coming to join us, especially since it is a weekday. With the recent hot dry spells, we urged our volunteers to protect themselves and hydrate! We also conducted our usual briefing in the NEA building prior to departure onto the seashore...

TeamSeagrass at Youth Eco-Fiesta 2009

The Team is back out to share about our seagrasses and shores at Youth Eco-Fiesta 2009. Held in the heartlands of Tampines, the Fiesta celebrates World Environment Day with a festival of youth talents. The NPark Biodiversity Trail was also invited to participate.Wei Ling put together a great booth of TeamSeagrass and the Coral Nursery for the Trail.
Since Minister Mah Bow Tan was the Guest of Honour, there was lots of media too!Part of the Trail was a Quiz which lots of people participated in.
They had some questions to answer which they could find out by looking at the exhibits and talking to the volunteers.
The Quiz is a big hit! Some get a little help from mum. While others do it gamely on their own.
We had various interested visitors too with lots of questions about our seagrasses and our shores.
Even the youngest ones dropped by the booth.
Of course it was a delight to welcome Minister Mah to the booth and share with him the work being done on our seagrasses.

Thanks to everyone who came to help out! Andy, Ivan, Robin, Shufen, Kevin and of course Wei Ling as always taking care of everything.

TeamSeagrass on Nature Blog Network

"What is it about that tiny island in the Southeast Asia? That a small island, only 274 square miles, could be a nature blogging juggernaut seems odd." asks Nature Blog Network "But there are a few clues here and there. 23% of the nation consists of forests and nature preserves. The wetlands surround the main island and the 60 odd other islands are famous for their marine diversity. So the nature is there, even if intuitively it doesn’t seem possible for a city famous for both its size and density." they continue.

"And, importantly, there’s a nascent environmental movement that seeks to use new media to get information out to like-minded people with an interest to conserve those unique places."

And in their second feature on Singapore blogs, they have kindly highlighted the TeamSeagrass blog and our work for our seagrasses. Thank you!

Go check out their blog entry and visit the Nature Blog Network for lots of nature blogs from Singapore and around the world!

Volve Race marine outreach (16 Jan 09)

TeamSeagrass spent a very windy day at 1degree15 Marina at Sentosa for the Volvo Race special Scouts' marine outreach programme. With lots of posters and even our monitoring gear, the TeamSeagrass booth seems to fascinate the visitors.
TeamSeagrass shared about our wonderful seagrass meadows and what ordinary people can do for them.
Thanks to Kok Sheng who collected the seagrass specimens on our last trip to Pulau Semakau, we had a nice tank of live seagrasses. This came in handy for showing features like the fact that they are flowering plants, as Siti Nurbaya explains here. And Wei Ling also puts the tank to great use to point out features. Later on, Siti had a great idea of asking the Scouts to match the seagrasses in the tank to the photos on our species poster! The visitors are great at it!
Siti is great with the kids, who enthusiastically clamour to answer her questions. One gives really wacky answers to the delight of his friends.
Marcus Tay rushed in from his earlier appointment just so that he could help out at the event.
We get loads and loads of scouts of all colours and sizes who are really keen to learn about our seagrasses. And this group from Bartley are very keen to join us on our trips! This fantastic opportunity to share about seagrasses is all thanks to Tan Sijie, who looks so snazzy in his Scouts uniform, don't you think? He worked very hard to put the show together and I think it was a great success in reaching out to a wide range of people.
He even arranged for us to have lunch and free ice-cream! Here's the team taking a short, well-deserved break in a long day of selling seagrasses.

Thanks to Kok Sheng for the seagrasses, Colin for setting up the tank, Siti Nurbaya, Marcus Tay and of course Siti and Wei Ling for being there to share about seagrasses.
